Today is the day where we get to dress up as a story book character! Well, being the Spanish teacher, I obviously had to do something with my subject. I found a book on the life of Frida Kahlo and dressed up as her! What do you think?

This week we are studying Dia de los Muertos! Even though it is mainly a Mexican holiday, all the grade levels will be studying it. One Monday we will compare and contrast Dia de los Muertos and Halloween. Tuesday we are looking at altars, making a list of what an "ofrenda" consists of and starting to make our own school altar for Frida Kahlo (an artist they are studying in art class). Wednesday students will be making masks and decorating them (also something they have started in art class). Thursday students will make decorations for the altar and discuss the significance of the products used and made during the Day of the Dead. We will also be trying some Pan de Muerto (or Bread of the Dead) and be able to take pictures at the Frida Kahlo/Catrina selfie station!
Our central idea for Where We Are In Time and Place is when, where and how do Spanish speakers around the world celebrate? Through studying Dia de los Muertos we will answer this question with one of the most important Hispanic holidays. I'm really looking forward to seeing the kids be risk-takers by trying new foods and open-minded by learning about different beliefs. Pictures of our school altar to come! This week we are learning how to say the date in Spanish. The vocab is available in the resources (http://phespanish.weebly.com/vocabulary.html). I have also linked some songs and videos to help you practice at home. I will be placing some resources in all the classrooms as well, so that students can practice doing the calendar in Spanish. Some of the activities we will do are days and months go fish and memory. GO FISH
Instead of using regular cards, I made my own playing cards with months and days and numbers vocab. Students have to match English word with the Spanish word. MEMORY Memory is an easy game to practice vocab. The deck of cards we use has one English card (ex: October) and a Spanish card (ex: Octubre) for each word. You place the cards face down on the desk with other cards. Lift one card, read the word, put it down. Then try to find the match. If the card was in English, find the Spanish card. If the card was in Spanish, find the English card. You can only lift one card at a time. If you don't find the match, the next person goes. Keep rotating until all the cards are matched.
This week we are learning about our numbers. Although it doesn't tie in directly to our theme of where we are in time and place, I believe being able to say our numbers is integral to this unit. We need to know our numbers to learn how to say the date, which ties in directly with being able to describe when Spanish speakers of other countries celebrate holidays and festivals. In the resources section, you will find all the vocab for this six weeks, including numbers 1-30. I have also added some fun songs to learn numbers and some videos about numbers. Please take the time to look at them and listen to some of them to practice vocab at home! Some of the activities we will be doing this week (that can also be done at home for more practice) are Go fish, Bingo, Cup stacking and Exercise Counting. GO FISH VOCAB
BINGO
Some bingo cards will be put up in the resources section soon to print out and practice Spanish numbers. CUP STACKING Students will pull a number from a hat and stack that many cups while saying the numbers. This can be played many ways; as a contest to see who can stack and count the numbers fastest, who can count the highest in Spanish and make the biggest tower, etc. EXERCISE COUNTING Students pull a number and exercise card and count the exercise (jumping jacks, toe touches, etc.) in Spanish. We are starting our new unit this week! We are learning about where we are in time and place. The IB describes the unit as "An exploration of our orientation in place and time; of our personal histories and geographies; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives."
Our Central idea is: When, where, and how do Spanish speakers around the world celebrate? Our lines of inquiry are: ● Celebrations, festivals and holidays ● Months, days, numbers ● Geography Our guiding questions are: -What celebrations and holidays do we have in common with the people of ______? What is different? -When do they celebrate certain holidays? -What countries speak Spanish? Today fifth grade is learning how to make blog posts for Spanish class. We are crazy llamas and we named our teacher Darth Coxen cuz she loves Star Wars. Everyone likes jackets, so we are excited to learn clothing words in Spanish. We want to learn about types of food Spanish speakers eat, animals, and numbers.
Spanish class rules Also, everyone has to like cheese, because that's Darth Coxen's favorite food. Llamas are awesome, we must obey the llamas. (Mrs. Mcneils class really likes llamas...) Ms. Breedan's class is awesome. They are learning lots of Spanish. We want to learn the days of the week and months of the year, numbers, and about Cuban food. We are excited to try Cuban food because Mrs. Coxen's family is from Cuba and she knows how to cook really AWESOME! We are learning about the country Cuba, but we also want to learn about other countries around the world and their cities.
Mr. Edwards' class wants to be called the LSU Tigers, but Mrs. Coxen is from the UF Gators and she don't like the Tigers, GO GATORS!!!!! So our name is the Spanish Superheroes. :D :D :D Just kidding, they can be called the LSU Tigers.
We have to make sure we are learning as much as we can. Mr. Edwards also needs to learn Spanish so he can talk to his wife and daughters and his in-laws. We want to learn about schools, states, numbers, and crazy hard words in Spanish. We are looking forward to going to the state fair tomorrow for fair day! Its going to be awesome! We love Spanish and Mrs. Coxen. We love learning Spanish every day, we especiallywant to learn our numbers and lots of songs in Spanish. We also want to learn how to say harvest, outerspace, and fruits. Ms. R's class thinks they are the smartest in the whole school, but we disagree. WE ARE! Gus gus is one of our class pets and he likes to sit on Mrs. Coxen during Spanish class. Pinky is too shy and she peed on Mrs. Coxen, so she doesn't trust her anymore. But Mrs. Coxen is still really nice and feeds her lots of mice fruit loops. :D
Unfortunately I was sick for two whole weeks and we didn't have time to present all the Spanish projects. The students worked really hard and are sad that they can't present them all. Especially George and Fallon and Anaya and Mealat and Joshua and Carolina, and Mason and Adam and Luke and Trista and Dayana and Philip and David. I am really proud of the effort the whole class put in. Since we dont have time to present, we decided to show some of them on the website for the whole world to see. And George is still upset that he can't present. :(
We are excited to learn Spanish and want to learn how to speak well. Especially the food from Spain, and the try it. :D |
