Today in Spanish we decorated the school with papel picado for the international program. It looks amazing! A special thank you to Jessica Cardiel for making all the papel picado, all my classes for putting them on strings, especially fifth grade, who helped my littles and completed an entire hallway in less than 15 minutes! You guys rock!

Today we are starting a small unit on food. I am introducing it by bringing food typical of the country the students are studying.
First grade-Mexico: I brought tortillas, pollo, arroz, mole, tres leches y abuelita chocolate. Second grade-Cuba: I borught flan, arooz y frijoles negros, y pasta de guayaba. Third grade-Argentina: I brought milanesa, chimichurri, dulce de leche, y mate. Fourth grade-Spain: I brought paella and flan. Fifth grade: fifth grade gets to taste a bit of everything since they don't have a specific country. I'm so excited! Students are going to discuss the difference and similarities between the food they are trying and the food that they are used to eating in the US. At the end of the week they will draw a typical dish from their country to add to their travel books. Throughout the year we will be working on a travel book for a Spanish Speaking country. We will work on it mostly in class, some pages even being an assessment for a unit or week of study. This travel book is something that will go into their IB binders and travel with them through the years they are in IB. Below is the rubric for the book. The book won't be due until the end of the year, when the students do a presentation of everything they learned about the culture. I'm really excited to see what the students find out about their country! This six weeks we will be studying the culture of a Spanish speaking country. First grade is studying Mexico, second grade is Cuba, third is Argentina, fourth is Spain and fifth gets to choose their own country. 1st grade will do their projects mostly in class. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th will get a little bit of class time, but most of it will need to be worked on at home as homework. Below is a PDF of the explanation, rubric and examples that I will be sending home tomorrow. Basically, students can choose any aspect of the culture they want, whether we have studied it or not, and make a physical project of it. Their projects can range anywhere from recipes and sample food, to dioramas of festivals, recreations of famous artwork, reports on famous people, costumes, etc. It is an opportunity for the students to research whatever they want and be creative. I invite parents to help with the project, but please give your scholar the opportunity to do as much as possible. This project is to be student led and parent created work defeats the purpose of the inquiry. I know our students are capable of some amazing things and I want them to shine! If you have any questions, you can email me or comment on the blog and I will try to be as clear as I can to help resolve any confusion. Thank you so much! An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs, and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity, our appreciation of the aesthetic. This six weeks we will be focusing on the transdisciplinary theme of How we express ourselves Central Idea: How do Spanish speakers around the world express themselves through culture? Lines of Inquiry: -Food and clothing -Cultural Celebrations -Similarities and differences IB learner profile: We will learn to be inquirers, communicators and risk-takers. IB transdisciplinary skills: We will develop our communication, social, research and self-management skills. PHE Spanish now has a Twitter! @PHEspanish This week students are learning about the different countries that speak Spanish around the world. There are 20 Spanish speaking countries we will study (excluding Equatorial Guinea). They are:
Argentina Bolivia Chile Columbia Costa Rica Cuba Dominican Republic Ecuador El Salvador Guatemala Honduras Mexico Nicaragua Panama Paraguay Peru Puerto Rico Spain Uruguay Venezuela For this week I created bags for each country. Each bag has a map of the world with the specific country colored, examples of the money used, pictures of food, clothing, people, landscape, housing, etc., and the flag. Students will explore the bags, writing and inferring one thing they learned from each country into a "passport". Today is Dia de los Muertos! All last week the students learned about Day of the Dead, why it is celebrated and even made some products typical of the holiday. We made papel picado, sugar skull masks and wrote a story from the perspective of those who have passed for Dia de los Muertos. Here is a picture of the ofrenda we made as a school.
